How your business can make you rich! Success Pyramid: Understanding our genetics & ancestors and how that can make us Rich! HABIT 2: by Jeffrey Brooks, CPA, CFP, MBA for Jbrooks Wealth Advisors, PC, a Professional CPA and CFP Firm 602-292-2009 or 602-687-9900 x101
Our mental and physical equipment have not changed over the past million years. If we were born outside of our current society into a primitive society, we would not be able to speak English or go down to the local burger shop to eat. What we would have is our survival instincts including our need to have a competitive advantage to stay alive!

We are walking down the road and a branch falls close to our eyes. What is our involuntary reaction? We close our eyes to avoid our eyes being injured.
When we see a “danger” like a tiger coming at us, what is our involuntary reaction, to flee, to hide(so we will not be seen) or to fight back with a weapon.

The problem we have is that we constantly see these “dangers” and we are constantly fleeing, freezing and fighting back which is taking a negative toll on our bodies and our brains. The results are disease including heart attacks, strokes, cancers, dementia and Alzheimer.
Habit 1 was the importance of changing your eating habits. Habit 2 is obtaining the understanding of why are stressed.
I will explain that because we are constantly trying to “survive”, we interpret many events that are not trying to “kill us” at threats to our survival.
Habit 2 is reducing the number of threats which are so injurious physically and mentally. By finding healthy habits, we will be able to lives a richer life.
The first lesson is to understand the three parts of our brain.
Our oldest brain resulted in our ancestors’ survival and procreation and gave us intense emotions (unlike the reptiles and most mammals).
The “new” brain known as the Prefrontal Cortex is the “thinking brain”.
The problem is that our bad habits reduce the power of the “thinking brain” to make us richer human beings.
The first way to change our “thinking brain” using our need for survival and competitive advantage is to understand what are the threats to our survival.
For example, I am 60 years old now and I do not want my professional career to be cut short by the negative effects of poor health and aging.
“Survival” and “Competitive Advantage (self-esteem) threats come from being overweight, fatigue, losing productive time due to colds and back problems and contracting life threatening diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart problems.
Losing my professional career is considered a threat to my “survival” as a happy human being.
The second way to change our “thinking brain” is to understand clearly what are Values are and then using goals and an action plans to live these values.
In HABIT 3, I will explain that how physical health is critical to continuing our walk up the Success Pyramid to become richer whether it be money or peace.
